Centuries of charitable work on one website

by Beth Ellin

We’ve been hard at work designing a site for the Feoffees of St Michael’s Spurriergate, York.

The Feoffees have been investing in charitable work since 1599 and it’s been our pleasure to bring that great work online.

The official job of a Feoffee is to "act as a trustee invested with a freehold estate to hold in possession for a charitable purpose," and the modern Feoffees are still doing just that. They offer out grants ranging from £250 to £100,000 to benefit the inhabitants of York.

The new site is perfect for spreading the word about the funding that the Feoffees can offer. Take a look for yourself:

The Feoffee site needed to be clear and easy to navigate around to give users access to the information they need to be able to apply for grant funding. We designed a clean layout with bold navigation elements to make sure users know exactly where they needed to go to find the information they need.

The website is full of emotive testimonials from people who have already benefitted from funding from the Feoffees, including the York Disaster Fund for the flood appeal in 2015, the Red Tower Project, and York Minster’s Great East Window.

One of the most helpful elements of the website is an map of York centre. To be able to gain funding from the Feoffees, a group needs to be inside the historic boundaries of York City and there's lots of confusion over what does and does not qualify. Having clicked on the image, the user opens a large, scalable map of York and can follow the city boundary from 31st March 1974 to make sure they're going to qualify for Feoffee support.

We’ve loved working on this website. It’s full of gorgeous pictures and touching stories of all the support the Feoffees have been able to provide to local causes.

The Feoffees website shows how powerful a small site can be. If you want a small site of your own, please get in touch. With beautiful design and a powerful offer, a few pages are all you need to help your users.
