Tour de France & Tour de Yorkshire cycling app
On 5 and 6 July 2014, all eyes were on Yorkshire as the Grand Départ of the Tour de France set off from Leeds and some of the world's top cyclists raced through the Yorkshire Dales to Harrogate and the following day set off from York and raced to Sheffield.
City of York Council's Road Safety team, along with Leeds City Council, Safer Roads Humber, North Yorkshire County Council and North Yorkshire Police, plus local video-production company, Rolling Snowballs, approached us to create an app which would help cyclists safely ride the routes of the two Yorkshire stages.
Rolling Snowballs created some fabulous videos (with the help of semi-pro cyclist Jamie Sharp, Radio York's Jonathan Cowap and a North Yorkshire Police escort) and Bow House created an app for iPhones and Android devices.
With maps showing the two routes, a host of videos including flyovers of sections of the stages and the videos of Jamie Sharp riding many of the tougher sections, road safety information and a live news feed linked directly to the Yorkshire Grand Départ's news website, the app is a must-have for anyone who fancies riding the routes of some of their cycling heroes.
And the clients were so delighted with the result, they approached us a few months later to completely update the app with new routes for the inaugural Tour de Yorkshire, a superb new 3-day race on 1, 2 and 3 May 2015. The updated app now boasts 6 maps, twice as many videos, and a fresh new look.
