Hello Yorkshire http://www.bowhouse.co.uk/portfolio//portfolio/hello-yorkshire http://www.bowhouse.co.uk/portfolio/hello-yorkshire#comments Tue, 06 Jul 2010 11:49:04 +0000 http://www.bowhouse.co.uk/portfolio/hello-yorkshire The Brief

The aim was to build a directory site aimed at tourists in Yorkshire. The site needed to have the following attributes:

  • outstanding design - has to be attractive to reflect the beauty of the area covered

  • fast loading, efficient and easy to navigate - so visitors can find their way around the site quickly and intuitively

  • easy search facilities to allow visitors to drill down to exactly the area and type of accommodation they’re looking for

  • information clearly and consistently displayed - to make it easy on the eye, and the brain

  • database-driven - so easily updateable

  • extensive content management system - so that news and events can be uploaded in good time

  • maximally optimised for search engines - so that the site scores high on rankings across a broad range of search criteria: high visitor numbers means better responses for advertisers

The Work

This is a project which is ongoing and needs constant development - the site has to be able to adapt to changing technology and market trends. Hello Yorkshire was launched in January 2009 and we’ve been developing it continuously ever since - adding features, incorporating new modules, and redesigning the look and feel - to ensure that it provides the first class service that its visitors demand.

Yorkshire is such a huge county with varied terrain and a vast range of accommodation and attractions in big cities, market towns, rural villages and tiny hamlets. The design has to reflect the most important aspects of Yorkshire, and yet have links to the by-ways - the idiosyncrasies - that add that special flavour which makes Yorkshire the unique county that it is. If you need to find hotel in the heart of Leeds or a B&B in a quiet village, if you’re travelling with the family or in business on your own, if you want a peaceful relaxing weekend or a busy action-packed fortnight Hello Yorkshire can generate a list of properties and activities to suit almost everyone’s taste. And a lot of hard work has gone into how the site is constructed to ensure that it’s easy for visitors to find their way around.

The best-designed site in the world is useless if it doesn’t attract visitors, and isn’t specially optimised so that search engines pick it up and place it high in their rankings. Search Engine Optimisation is therefore an extremely important part of the mix. We think that we have designed a site that is very search engine friendly, and our site stats back us up. We’ve been steadily climbing the rankings since we launched and we’re now on page one on Google, Yahoo!, Bing, etc for many of the top searches - and that’s some achievement in what is a very competitive market place with some very big players.

The Outcome

Hello Yorkshire is a tourism site packed full of information for visitors. It includes extensive lists of holiday accommodation throughout Yorkshire as well as Tourist Information and details of attractions.

Hello Yorkshire plays an active role in helping the local economy by putting prospective visitors in touch with the hundreds of establishments featured on the site. This is a complex, database-driven website created and managed entirely in-house by our outstanding team of web developers and designers.

Check out Hello Yorkshire for Whitby hotels, York hotels or other Yorkshire accommodation.

Robinson's Jet Online Store http://www.bowhouse.co.uk/portfolio//portfolio/robinsons-jet http://www.bowhouse.co.uk/portfolio/robinsons-jet#comments Tue, 08 Jun 2010 11:41:31 +0000 http://www.bowhouse.co.uk/portfolio/robinsons-jet The Brief

Whitby is a quaint town, a historic seaport renowned for its thriving town centre; full of highly individual, boutique shops like Robinson’s Jet. When Robinson’s decided to sell online they wanted their new website to reflect the character both of the town and their locally-crafted jewellery.

They also wanted to be able to manage the site themselves, adding and updating products, and keeping track of orders through a simple, easy to use admin system.

The Work

The essence of the business is rooted in the natural landscape and coastal heritage. The boutique nature of the shop and the locally sourced Whitby jet inspired a design that was unique and reflected both the products and the history of the surrounding area.

We built the whole site on our straight forward, user friendly content management system, which allows Robinson’s to update the site content and manage the online shop with ease.

The Outcome

The result is an attractive online store which is easy for visitors to use and just as easy for Robinson’s staff to manage. The store began generating orders almost immediately and the folks at Robinson’s were thrilled.

Stephensons of Easingwold http://www.bowhouse.co.uk/portfolio//portfolio/stephensons-of-easingwold http://www.bowhouse.co.uk/portfolio/stephensons-of-easingwold#comments Mon, 24 May 2010 16:17:16 +0000 http://www.bowhouse.co.uk/portfolio/stephensons-of-easingwold The Brief

As a highly successful and well-known local business, when Stephensons of Easingwold needed a new website, it was imperative we protected their brand. They were after a completely new feel to the site, coupled with a flexible content management system.

The Work

Firstly, we created a brand new look for the website, emphasizing the quality coaches and outstanding service offered by this friendly, local firm. We then built the whole site on our in-house content management system, allowing the Stephensons team the flexibility to amend all images and text as easily as they might write a Word doc. This gives them great control over the site, and they are able to add news items regularly to ensure fresh content, which along with our SEO work has helped to drive them up Google for terms such as ‘York coach hire’.

The Outcome

The website is a huge success, as David Stephenson, Director, enthused: “The look and appeal of the new site is such an improvement on what we had previously that it is hard to quantify in words! The feedback from our staff, customers and everyone who has seen it has been phenomenally positive and the new site is already generating several potential new sales enquiries every week.”

Jervaulx Abbey http://www.bowhouse.co.uk/portfolio//portfolio/jervaulx-abbey http://www.bowhouse.co.uk/portfolio/jervaulx-abbey#comments Mon, 24 May 2010 16:36:27 +0000 http://www.bowhouse.co.uk/portfolio/jervaulx-abbey The Brief

Now an enchanting and charming ruin, Jervaulx Abbey was once a magnificent Cistercian monastery. Privately owned, and with tea rooms and a bed and breakfast property on site, this great Yorkshire treasure was in need of a beautifully crafted website to show off its wonderful features.

The Work

We started off by photographing the abbey ruin, B&B, tea rooms, gift shop and plant centre, and then set to work creating a website to complement the unique atmosphere of the abbey. To add to the site’s mood, the owners were keen to have a musical soundtrack to the site, so we contacted the composer of “Bells for Jervaulx” and embedded his pieces into the site’s homepage.

The Outcome

The new Jervaulx Abbey website is a triumph and has helped to increase visitors not only to the abbey, but also to the bed and breakfast business. The owners were delighted with the way the website captures the distinctive ambience of this very special Yorkshire attraction.

Barron's Electrical http://www.bowhouse.co.uk/portfolio//portfolio/barrons-electrical http://www.bowhouse.co.uk/portfolio/barrons-electrical#comments Mon, 24 May 2010 16:33:59 +0000 http://www.bowhouse.co.uk/portfolio/barrons-electrical The Brief

Barron’s Electrical needed a site that demonstrated familiarity in managing large scale, multi-discipline projects, as well as emphasising many years of experience in electrical design consultancy in commercial and industrial environments.

Having also formed a working partnership with a local installations contractor, Mark was keen to highlight that Barron’s Electrical offered a full service design, manage and install package, in order to increase their appeal to construction contractors.

As Mark offers a UK wide service, he needed the site to be found in the search engines by as many potential clients as possible.

The Work

After talking to Mark to gain an understanding of the industry our team carried out extensive keyword research into the terms associated with his work. We then wrote original and professional sounding copy that would appeal to potential clients as well as search engines.

RSS feeds of electrical industry news from the Institute of Engineering and Technology and the British Standards Institute were implemented on the site’s homepage as Barron’s Electrical strongly believe in keeping up to date with innovative practices and industry legislation.

As well as being able to edit and update all the site content, Barron’s also requested their own news section to keep clients updated with recent projects and company developments.

We also worked with Barron’s Electrical’s Installations partner to source some great images of industrial and commercial electrical projects as examples to clients.

The Outcome

Mark was delighted with the professional look of the new site. Search engine optimization work continues, but Barron’s have already placed well in the search engines for some important key phrases, resulting in a steady increase in traffic, and Mark is receiving good quality leads through the site.

Fauconberg Arms http://www.bowhouse.co.uk/portfolio//portfolio/fauconberg-arms-website http://www.bowhouse.co.uk/portfolio/fauconberg-arms-website#comments Mon, 24 May 2010 16:17:58 +0000 http://www.bowhouse.co.uk/portfolio/fauconberg-arms-website The Brief

Having proved ourselves with a successful marketing campaign and the design and print of various marketing products, Simon Rheinberg at the Fauconberg Arms asked Bow House to create them a stunning new website to promote the accommodation and food side of the business.

The Work

Using the fantastic photographs we commissioned at the start of the project, we created a contemporary website emphasizing the unique family atmosphere of the pub, whilst at the same time highlighting the exceptional accommodation and top quality food available to guests.

The Outcome

Bow House and the Fauconberg Arms are a perfect match – as a family-run business ourselves, we’re well-placed to understand the needs, pressures and budgets of a small local business. Check out the Fauconberg Arms website here – not only has traffic to the site increased, but the bounce rate has decreased dramatically and time spent on the site by visitors has more than doubled.

Visit Whitby http://www.bowhouse.co.uk/portfolio//portfolio/visit-whitby http://www.bowhouse.co.uk/portfolio/visit-whitby#comments Thu, 27 May 2010 15:29:11 +0000 http://www.bowhouse.co.uk/portfolio/visit-whitby The Brief

The WDTA and Whitby Beacon Town Forum wanted a site that:

  • becomes THE marketing vehicle for the town

  • is content rich, and contains lots of articles and information about the town and the surrounding area

  • they had control over - they wanted the facility to add and amend pages and update news and events on a daily basis

  • provides visitor statistics and analysis - vital for their marketing

  • is W3C compatible and CSS driven

The website needed to include accommodation listings for Whitby hotels, Whitby cottages, Whitby B&B, and Whitby Caravan and Camping sites - as well as details of local visitor attractions and places to eat.

It was also necessary to make the site partly self-funded and Bow House were commissioned to sell entries on the website to accommodation providers.

The Work

This is an ongoing partnership -  a major tourism project. We began by working on a design for the site and sourcing images before building the site structure. Most of the information pages were put up by the tourism associations using a Content Management System.

Accommodation for visitors is listed in a separate database-driven section which is managed by Bow House, as are a number of display advertisements that appear throughout the site.

The Outcome

The result is a very attractive and successful website with healthy and growing visitor numbers, excellent search engine rankings and a high proportion of repeat advertisers each year.

Members of the Whitby Beacon Town Forum and WDTA keep the site regularly updated so visitors can benefit from local news, events and tourist information.

Kearton Cottage http://www.bowhouse.co.uk/portfolio//portfolio/kearton-cottage http://www.bowhouse.co.uk/portfolio/kearton-cottage#comments Mon, 24 May 2010 16:35:05 +0000 http://www.bowhouse.co.uk/portfolio/kearton-cottage The Brief

A luxury cottage with fabulous views over the Dales, the owners of Kearton Cottage required a small but perfectly-formed website to attract visitors to their beautiful 5-star property in Barnard Castle.

The Work

This was a lovely project, and all our conversations with Anne who owns Kearton Cottage were either over the telephone or via email – we've never actually met, proving that excellent work can be achieved from afar. However, our brief was clear, and we created a lovely site capitalizing on Anne’s gorgeous photographs of the cottage and its gardens.

The Outcome

A simple but effective website based on the theory that websites are often the first impression of your business – it’s vital that they are attractive, well-designed and a positive reflection of your professionalism – as Kearton Cottage’s website nicely demonstrates.

Visit North Yorkshire http://www.bowhouse.co.uk/portfolio//portfolio/visit-north-yorkshire http://www.bowhouse.co.uk/portfolio/visit-north-yorkshire#comments Thu, 27 Jan 2011 14:46:54 +0000 http://www.bowhouse.co.uk/portfolio/visit-north-yorkshire The Brief

The guide is designed to be distributed to visitors who are considering coming to the area, providing them with information about a range of accommodation, visitor attractions and places to eat in the area.

As a voluntary, private sector organisation, TANY made it clear that the guide would need to be completely funded by advertising sales and would need to be completed by November 2010 to be distributed most effectively.

The guide was to be designed as part of a family of guides due to be distributed by Welcome to Yorkshire.

The Work

We like a challenge at Bow House, so we immediately got to work, liaising with TANY regarding their requirements and ensuring that we operated within regional tourism guidelines.

Bow House designed and produced the guide as well as running the advertising sales campaign and creating adverts for the vast majority of the advertisers. We managed the whole project on behalf of TANY, including print and delivery.

The Outcome

The result is an excellent, attractive guide that really showcases all that the area has to offer, providing readers with a great variety of accommodation options and ideas for things to do on their holidays. The project was delivered on time and at no cost to TANY. While having a unique, stand out design, the guide worked well as part of the family of guides being distributed by Welcome to Yorkshire.

Whitby Visitor Guide http://www.bowhouse.co.uk/portfolio//portfolio/whitby-visitor-guide http://www.bowhouse.co.uk/portfolio/whitby-visitor-guide#comments Mon, 24 May 2010 15:52:41 +0000 http://www.bowhouse.co.uk/portfolio/whitby-visitor-guide The Brief

The Guide's aim is to be an easy-to-handle source of information for visitors when they arrive in Whitby. It's packed full of useful articles and informative advertisements, giving information about places to visit and things to do.

The WDTA asked us to make sure it reflected the character of this historic seaport but it was also essential to make it self-funding by selling advertisng space.

The Work

Bow House design and produce the guide as well as sell the advertising space to many local eateries and visitor attractions to ensure the guide is packed with useful information for visitors. Despite it being jam packed with information, it remains a portable, handbag/pocket-sized publication.

We manage the project on behalf of the WDTA, including the print and delivery.

The Outcome

The Guide is a hugely successful and very popular little publication which is always in great demand in the Tourist Information Centres, restaurants, shops and other stockists throughout Whitby and the local area.

Yorkshire Dales National Park 'The Visitor' and 'The Dales' http://www.bowhouse.co.uk/portfolio//portfolio/yorkshire-dales-national-park-authority http://www.bowhouse.co.uk/portfolio/yorkshire-dales-national-park-authority#comments Thu, 27 May 2010 17:13:56 +0000 http://www.bowhouse.co.uk/portfolio/yorkshire-dales-national-park-authority The Brief

The Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority were looking for a full service publications partner to deliver design and layout, advertising sales, production and project management services for two of their printed publications.

‘The Visitor’ has a huge 220,000 print run and is a major marketing tool to promote events and attractions in the National Park, supporting the local economy. It’s also a great opportunity for visitor attractions and local eateries to promote their services to visitors.

12,000 copies of The 'Dales' newspaper are produced twice a year, once in spring, and then again in autumn. It promotes the work of the National Park Authority and its partners, as well as reporting on many issues of local interest. This is also a crucial marketing tool in helping to foster a strong relationship between the YDNPA and the National Park residents. Local business offering services to residents use the ‘Dales’ to promote their businesses through advertising.

As well as the printed publications, The YDNPA also require web versions of the publications so that they can be made available to the public through their website, promoting the area to a wider audience of potential visitors.

The Work

Both publications are part-funded through the sale of advertising space, which is handled by our experienced sales team who source contacts, market the publications to prospective advertisers and forge valuable relationships that lead to repeat bookings.

The entire publication is designed in our studio, using articles and images provided by the YDNPA and its associates. We gather in advertising copy and provide design services to a wide range of businesses looking to make the most of the promotional opportunity. With all the elements in hand we create striking, imaginative page layouts, while always ensuring that we pay close attention to important accessibility guidelines. All copy is proof read thoroughly to guarantee the quality of the publication and our knowledgeable production staff liaise with print houses to ensure value, excellence and timely delivery for the YDNPA and the readers.

Once the printed publication has been produced the files are converted into a web accessible version of the guide, available to all through the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority's website.

The Outcome

Bow House are delighted to have been working alongside the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority over the last three years for their printed and online publications. Both our designs and our efficient handling of the projects have been highly commended by The YDNPA as the publications and our working relationship have gone from strength to strength - long may the partnership continue as we look ahead to the autumn edition of 'Dales' 2010 and the upcoming 2011 publications.
